During the 1980s and into the 1990s (this photo is 1997) St. Paul's was a sanctuary for refugees from the U.S.-sponsored wars in Central America.

Note: St. Pauls is currently undergoing some renovation of it's spires... It'd be great if someone could add photos and notes about that here. Here is an article about it from the Noe Valley Voice: http://www.noevalleyvoice.com/2009/October/StP.htm
